Brittany Martin, soprano

Brittany Martin, soprano, voice instructor, and arts administrator, believes music has an unmatched power to connect us more deeply to ourselves and others. This philosophy informs each of her professional endeavors as a performer, educator, and administrator. Her most recent recital, I Never Saw Another Butterfly, explored themes of grief, hope, and the human spirit. She presented this sold-out recital of chamber music by Bernstein, Hagen, Laitman, Roussel, and Tavener in partnership with the University of South Carolina's Anne Frank Center (2023). Other chamber performances include Ravel's Trois Poèmes de Stéphane Mallarmé (2023) and Peter Ablinger’s haunting Wiesse Litanei (2022). She has worked directly with composers including Pulitzer Prize winner Raven Chacon, Alex Temple, and Lori Laitman, and she regularly premieres vocal works. Some Strings Attached, a chamber ensemble co-founded by Ms. Martin, presented a concert tour in May 2023 that culminated in an artist residency at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Her recent roles include Mary Warren in Robert Ward’s The Crucible, Parthoenis (La belle Héléne), La Musica (L’Orfeo), and Phoebe D’Ysquith (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder). In 2022, she presented a recital of staged Czech art songs with Opera at USC in (Columbia, SC) and at the Castelton Festival (Castleton, VA).  As a concert soloist, she has performed Adams's Grand Pianola Music (USC Wind Ensemble, 2023); "O luce di quest' anima," from Linda di Chamounix (Lee Univeristy Concerto Competition Winner, 2018); and "Domine Deus" from Vivaldi's Gloria (Lee University Masterworks, 2017). Brittany is a graduate of the University of South Carolina (MM Voice Performance - Community Engagement Emphasis) where she studied with Dr. Tina Milhorn-Stallard and Lee University (BA Music - Voice).  As an artistic liaison at USC Brittany has worked closely with contemporary music ensembles and composers including Kronos Quartet, Michael Abels, Bang on a Can All-Stars, and The Westerlies. She is an alumna of Longy's Divergent Studio (2022), Classic Lyric Arts: Italian Session (2021) and the Milnes VOICExperience (2020). Brittany takes pride in cultivating musicianship in singers of all ages and connecting arts organizations more holistically with their communities.
